A cleanup campaign began on April 6 in the protected area of the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex, aiming to remove about 4,250 cubic meters of garbage and debris from a four-kilometer stretch near the Evitamiento road. The effort involves public and private institutions in La Libertad region and is intended to strengthen protection and conservation measures for this heritage site.

The initiative addresses ongoing issues with illegal dumping in the intangible zone surrounding Chan Chan, which is recognized as part of the World Heritage. The campaign uses heavy machinery such as front loaders and dump trucks. It is organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Production of La Libertad, together with Huanchaco District Municipality, La Libertad’s Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC), and other organizations.

He also said that beyond cleaning efforts, the Ministry of Culture is responding to alerts about invasions into protected archaeological areas in Trujillo, Jequetepeque Valley, and other parts of the region.

This action follows a recent citizen-led cleanup at another section between Huanchaco and Víctor Larco districts. These activities are part of broader efforts to protect cultural heritage through cooperation among authorities, businesses, and citizens.
