The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on March 31 that the construction of Chinchero International Airport has reached 40 percent completion. Minister Aldo Prieto said during an inspection visit that the project is one of the most important infrastructure works in southern Peru and aims to strengthen the country’s global connections, including potential routes to North America and other destinations.
The airport is expected to handle up to 12 million passengers annually and plans to begin operations in 2027. Prieto also announced that the contract for building the control tower, a key component for airport operations, will be awarded in the coming weeks.
Officials say this project seeks to position Cusco as a strategic hub in Latin America by boosting tourism, economic growth, and social development. The new airport is designed to decentralize air traffic from Lima and expand international flight options.
The facility will feature an international-standard terminal with eleven boarding bridges and greater capacity than Cusco’s current airport. “Este aeropuerto marcará un antes y un después en la conectividad del sur del país; buscamos que, después de Lima, Cusco se consolide como el principal centro de conexiones de Sudamérica,” affirmed Minister Aldo Prieto.
Other officials attending the inspection included Congressman Juan Mori; Australian Ambassador James Yeomans; and Paola Marín, Director General of Civil Aeronautics at MTC. The ministry said it remains committed to advancing strategic airport projects in southern Peru.
