The death of César Gutiérrez Muñoz (1945–2026) leaves a significant gap in Peruvian archival science and the field of Peruvian studies, according to a May 5 announcement. Gutiérrez Muñoz was known for his dedication to protecting documentary heritage, viewing it as both a public service and a collective responsibility.
His career focused on safeguarding archives, strengthening institutions, training specialists, and establishing archival science as an important discipline for Peru’s historical memory. His influence continues in the practices and communities he helped build.
Gutiérrez Muñoz played a central role in developing archival science in Peru. He founded and directed the Historical Archive of the Instituto Riva-Agüero from 1975 to 1979 and led the Central Archive at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) between 1983 and 2010. He also served as head of the National General Archive. His work extended beyond national borders: he was the first executive secretary of the Latin American Association of Archives and participated in the International Council on Archives.
Dra. Magally Alegre, head of the Riva-Agüero Historical Archive, said: “He was a recognized voice in defending documentary heritage throughout the region. His work made it possible to consolidate an understanding of archives as a service for society, beyond mere custody.”
Mag. Dora Palomo, coordinator at PUCP’s University Archive, said: “César has left many things—his example as an impeccable archivist, his constant concern with making visible both archivists’ work and that of archives themselves—especially his beloved University Archive to which he dedicated many years.”
Gutiérrez Muñoz viewed archives as spaces serving people; documents were living tools for research, public management, and daily life. This perspective influenced generations of archivists who continue this approach across various institutions.
His commitment included active defense of Peru’s National General Archive against threats to its collections’ integrity. He worked throughout different regions supporting local archives’ preservation efforts.
Several institutions have recognized his leadership in preserving documents and training specialists—a legacy that shapes national archival development today.
The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú promotes cultural wellbeing by emphasizing community contributions through education and research; it highlights academic achievements via its news portal under its institutional framework with RUC 20155945860 according to the official website.
