Cerro Verde announced on March 19 that it has signed an agreement with the municipality of Sachaca to improve urban infrastructure and strengthen road and pedestrian safety in the district. This marks the first project that Cerro Verde will carry out in Sachaca under the Works for Taxes mechanism, and is the ninth such initiative by the mining company in Arequipa.
The project aims to enhance living conditions for residents by upgrading public spaces and transportation routes. The agreement includes a technical study phase of 60 days, followed by a construction period of 150 days. The total investment exceeds 5 million 867 thousand soles, covering technical documentation, supervision, and construction costs.
Key components of the project include improving traffic flow and extending the lifespan of Madre Teresa Avenue. A section considered hazardous will be removed to reduce accident risks. Additional works involve building new parking areas, relocating eighteen utility poles, installing new streetlights for better nighttime visibility, and adding vehicle signage to facilitate safer circulation.
To further support pedestrian safety, wider sidewalks will be constructed along with accessible ramps and retaining walls to ensure inclusive mobility. The plan also features new public transport stops, recreational areas designed for people with visual disabilities, and expanded green spaces. Photovoltaic lighting systems will be installed to use renewable energy sources while increasing nighttime security coverage. Pedestrian signage at strategic points is expected to contribute to safer transit throughout Sachaca.
This initiative reflects Cerro Verde’s ongoing commitment to community development through infrastructure projects using tax incentives. The improvements are intended not only to modernize local facilities but also to promote safer environments for all residents.
