Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde announced on Apr. 30 the inauguration of a new campus for the National University of San Agustin (UNSA) in the district of Majes, Caylloma province. The project was completed with an investment exceeding S/28 million and is expected to benefit more than 16,000 students in the region over the next decade.
The initiative aims to strengthen access to higher education and foster local talent linked to key regional projects. The modern infrastructure covers 4,567 square meters and includes ten fully equipped classrooms, two libraries, three specialized laboratories, two research rooms, and multipurpose spaces designed for optimal academic training. The building was developed using bioclimatic architectural principles to improve thermal comfort and energy efficiency while promoting a sustainable learning environment.

The mining company has been recognized as the first Peruvian mining firm certified under ISO 37001:2016 for anti-corruption management according to its official website. It also generated direct and indirect employment for about 111,000 people while contributing significantly—54 percent—to Arequipa’s GDP and accounting for roughly 2.5 percent of Peru’s GDP according to its official website.
Cerro Verde has planted more than one million trees as part of its environmental initiatives according to its official website, constructed a wastewater treatment system processing a large portion of regional wastewater according to its official website, and advances sustainable practices through community development efforts.
The launch of this educational facility not only expands academic opportunities but also supports Majes’ role as a strategic hub for agroindustrial development in southern Peru.
