The Ministry of Education of Peru announced on Apr. 21 that Arequipa has the highest number of professionals honored with the Palmas Magisteriales, the top recognition given by the Peruvian state for outstanding contributions to education and national development.
This announcement highlights Arequipa’s ongoing commitment to educational excellence and its tradition of producing influential educators and professionals. The region has more than 150 recipients of this award, reflecting both the quality and dedication found among its teachers and education specialists.
Among those recognized from Arequipa are Honorio Delgado Espinoza, a psychiatrist and philosopher who received the award in 1965 in the Amauta category, as well as Everardo Zapata Santillana, creator of the widely used literacy book “Coquito,” who was honored in both 1981 (Educator) and 2004 (Amauta). More recently, Alejandra Lucía Hurtado Mazeyra was recognized in 2024 for her innovative work using technology in early childhood education.
The Ministry said that these stories show how “the recognition of Palmas Magisteriales not only distinguishes professional excellence but also highlights the transformative impact of education on students’ lives and communities.” The ministry is inviting public and private institutions to nominate candidates for this year’s awards until April 30.
